How do GroupSolver Matrix Questions work?

Our approach to matrix questions is different than most research platforms. Compared to other platforms, we do not present matrix questions in a matrix as we believe this leads respondents to deliver false responses to skip through major study sections. Instead, we provide matrix questions sequentially as if they are standard choice questions.

Creating a Matrix Question

Click the "+" and select either a Matrix or Image Matrix question.

Rows

By default, the "Matrix Question" text box will appear, and you can adjust this to include the question text you'd like to have. If your Matrix requires different syntax for each subquestion or different questions altogether, unselect the "Matrix question" toggle to disable the shared message.

After you fill in your question text, continue to fill in each subquestion of the Matrix in the "Attribute" text boxes.

Note: Be sure to give each of these an identifiable display name. The dashboard will present your question with a generic name, but to ease navigation in the future, give your question and subquestions unique names.

You may add/upload stimuli by clicking on the "Media Manager." You can upload relevant images, videos, gifs, etc., to your Matrix question.

Add new subquestions by clicking on the three dots under "Display name" or selecting "Add attribute."

You may modify the "seconds to read" portion if you'd like to force respondents to spend more time reading the text before being shown the options. The default is always 1 second.

Note: We recommend 1-3 seconds for each sentence in the question.

You may use the "Randomize" toggle to randomize the delivery of your subquestions.

Forwarding attributes from a list

You can also create an attribute that will pipe in items from a previously uploaded list. To do so, toggle the "Forward attributes from a list" on.

Select the list in the dropdown menu. Now, you can pipe in items from the list. Do so by including [[item]] in the Question text. There's a "Question text preview" to check that your question displays correctly.

If you wish to randomize the item order, toggle the "Randomize" on.

Set the Maximum number of Questions that the system will ask using the slider.

Note: You can also skip the Matrix question if there's nothing to present to respondent by simply toggling it on underneath the other settings.

Columns

Click on "Columns" to enter your choice options that will appear for each subquestion in the Matrix. The dashboard will give your question a generic name, but to ease navigation in the future, make sure to give your module a unique identifier in "Display name."

Question format

For your question format, you can pick one of 4 options:

  1. List - standard list of options.

  2. Dropdown with search - search field, options will drop down after click.

  3. Image choice - options will include images with labels.

  4. Image choice without labels - options will include images without labels.

Option label

The Option label is the list of options for a particular question. To enter a name for the option, click in the text field and start writing.

Clicking on "three dots" next to the option name will give you the following options:

  1. Randomize/pin option

  2. Add option above/below.

  3. Remove option

The Code is a numerical value automatically assigned to each option in the choice questions. You can change this number manually. If you want to reset the codes, click the "recycle button."

Clicking the down-facing arrow will open more options to edit:

  • Shortname - the shortened name of an option to give more visual quality while building a study

Adding a new option

If you want to add a new option, click "Add option." Clicking "Add "None of these" options" will quickly create an option with a "None of these" label.

You also may paste your options from Excel by selecting an Option and then pasting. All option types must be presented in different cells, and you also need to remove any formatting (bullets or numbered lists).

Note: The image matrix question allows you to accompany your options with visuals. Add them by clicking on the "Media Manager" icon.

If you want a multi-select question, use the "MAX _ of options allowed to choose" slider. You can also insert a minimum number of options respondents must choose.

More options

Clicking the three dots on the top right side of the panel will open more options:

  1. Duplicate - to duplicate the question

  2. Expand/Collapse all - to expand or collapse all option details

  3. Randomize all options

  4. Reset code values

  5. Create template from module/question - to create a template to be stored for future use
