How do GroupSolver Allocation questions work?

Allocation questions give respondents a range of options to assign value, totaling up to 100. This question creates a clear picture of what may be most or least important to the crowd out of the options provided.

Creating an Allocation Question

Click the "+" and select the Allocation question.

A text box will appear on the left panel of the Study design. Start typing your question inside the Question box. You may modify the "seconds to read" portion if you'd like to force respondents to spend more time reading the text before being shown the options. The default is always 1 second.

Note: We recommend 1-3 seconds for each sentence in the question.

You may add/upload stimuli by clicking on the "Media Manager" icon. You can upload any images, videos, gifs, etc., relevant to your Choice question.

Options

Once your question is created, click on "Options" to add your Allocation options and customize it to your liking.

The dashboard will give your question a generic name, but to ease navigation in the future, make sure to give your module a relevant unique identifier in "Display name."

Under "Limit settings," you can specify the limit value source (Default: Number) along with the limit value (Default: 100). This value can be any number you wish. Also, there is a "Must allocate all options" option where you can choose to allocate all points or not, depending on your objective.

The "Range settings" give an option of specifying the range with the minimum and maximum value that will be allocated to each option. The respondent will be unable to allocate any value outside that range for each option.

Respondent instruction is used when you want to add a written instruction (for example, unit) next to the numerical instruction ($, lb, etc.). You can choose whether to place the respondent instruction before or after the numerical one. You can also decide whether to add a blank space between the instructions.

Option label

The Option label is the list of options for a particular question. To enter a name for the option, click in the text field and start writing.

Clicking on "three dots" next to the option name will give you the following options:

  1. Randomize/pin option

  2. Add option above/below.

  3. Remove option

The Code is a numerical value automatically assigned to each option in the choice questions. You can change this number manually. If you want to reset the codes, click the "recycle button."

Clicking the down-facing arrow will open more options to edit:

  • Default value - lets you assign default numerical value the option should have

Adding a new option

If you want to add a new option, click "Add option."

Clicking "Add "None of these" options" will quickly create an option with a "None of these" label.

You also may paste your options from Excel by selecting an Option and then pasting. All option types must be presented in different cells, and you also need to remove any formatting (bullets or numbered lists).

More options

Clicking the three dots on the top right side of the panel will open more options:

  1. Duplicate - to duplicate the question

  2. Expand/Collapse all - to expand or collapse all option details

  3. Randomize all options

  4. Reset code values

  5. Create template from question - to create a template to be stored for future use
