IdeaCluster™

The IdeaCluster visualization allows you to quickly see which answers from open-ended questions have a high correlation with one another

Updated over a year ago

The IdeaCluster visualization is a reporting tool that allows you to quickly see which responses from open-ended questions have a high correlation with one another. The visual depicts colored bubbles in clusters, though some bubbles may stand alone as outliers. The bubbles in clusters are easily recognizable as correlated. An outlier shows that while one respondent delivered a unique response, the group was not as likely to agree with their answer. You may use this report to see what answers the crowd supports and how they compare.

Accessing the report

To open an IdeaCluster™ report, navigate to the top of your Study design and click "Reports." This will open an overlay with all reports that have already been created within the study. Click the AI Open-End™ question you would like to analyze and select "IdeaCluster™."

The steps above will open the report that was automatically generated and includes all segments. If you want to create a new report with the specific segments, click on the question you want to analyze and click "Add new."

Note: Refer to the Building Segments article in our Help Center for more information.

Reading the report

Within the report, you will immediately notice that there are many colored bubbles scattered throughout the visual—these colors are random.

In this specific study, there is an outlier on the far left of the graph. Bubble "X" is positioned alone. This means that those who agreed with this outlier answer were unlikely to agree with, say, answer "M."

We can also notice that answers "D," "M," and "K" were all highly correlated with one another.

The best way to gain insight from this report is first to look for outliers and clusters of ideas to see how specific answers may have correlated with one another.

Note: To assign meaning to the colors, open Chart Options and select "Display theme colors." This will apply theme colors to the bubbles. The bubbles that have no theme assigned to them will appear grey.

Answer details

If you hover over a bubble, you will notice that more information will pop out in a box format. If you click on the bubble, the box will pop out entirely and remain stationary for easier readability.

You can edit the information displayed in the box when stationary. You can also hide the answer bubble by clicking the crossed-eye icon. If you click a star icon, the bubble with the box will become highlighted.

Table view

There is also a table below each chart. This table displays the following data:

  1. Letter

  2. Answer

  3. Support Strength

  4. Total Expected Support

  5. Expected Support for particular segments

  6. Answer theme if applicable

Sorting and filtering

There are two ways to sort the chart.

The first is to click on the two arrows above the chart. This will open the sorting options. Here you can add or remove various sorting options.

The second is to click the column label in the chart table. The example below shows that the data is sorted by the Letter in ascending order and by the Support Strength and Total Expected Support in descending order.

To filter your data, click on the filter icon above your chart. This will open up the filtering options. To add a new filter, click "Add filter" in the top-right corner of the drop-down menu.

Managing segments

If you want to view the answers to only a specific demographic, click on "Data" above the chart. This will open a drop-down where you can manage the segments.

If you want to change a segment, click "All completes."

You can show "Top unthemed answers" in your chart by toggling the option.

Note: Learn more about managing segments in our Building Segments article.

Chart options

There are various settings in the Chart Options:

  • Trim whitespace - this settings trims whitespace that surrounds the bubbles, thus zooming the whole chart to improve readability

  • Title - you can change the chart's name here.

  • Display theme colors - toggling this will display theme colors directly on the chart.

  • Legend

    • Disabled - this setting will disable the chart legend

    • Draggable - choosing this will make the chart legend draggable

    • Static - this will enable the static, unmovable chart legend

  • Bubble details settings - you can set how much data related to the data point will display when you hover over the bubble or click on it.
