Learn more about Matrix Answers

Updated over a year ago

Many traditional survey platforms utilize the standard Matrix-style questionnaire in their surveys. The GroupSolver approach has tended to steer away from the more stale look and feel of traditional approaches. Compared to other platforms, we do not present matrix questions in a matrix as we believe this leads respondents to deliver false responses to skip through major study sections. Instead, we provide matrix questions sequentially as standard choice questions.

Accessing the report

To open a Matrix Answers report, navigate to the top of your Study design and click "Reports." This will open an overlay with all reports that have already been created within the study. Click the Matrix question you would like to analyze and select "Matrix."

The steps above will open the report that was automatically generated and includes all segments. If you want to create a new report with the specific segments, click on the question you want to analyze and click "Add new."

Note: Refer to the Building Segments article in our Help Center for more information.

Reading the report

Matrix questions allow you to ask one question about multiple attributes (matrix rows), which will be evaluated using the same options (matrix columns). Therefore, there are two main report views that you can choose from in the "Data" tab:

  1. Group by Options

  2. Group by Attributes

Group by Options

If you choose Grouping by Options, the Options (matrix columns) will populate the chart's X-axis. When you hover over the particular column, a tooltip displays the Option name, segment, individual attributes, and their support strength. Attributes are of a different color to improve readability.

Underneath the chart is a table, giving you a more detailed view of the data without the necessity of hovering over a particular column. You can resize the first column by dragging its border.

Sorting and filtering

There are two ways to sort the chart.

The first is to click on the two arrows above the chart. This will open the sorting options. Here you can add or remove various sorting options.

The second is to click the column label in the chart table. The example below shows that the data is sorted by the Question in ascending order.

To filter your data, click on the filter icon above your chart. This will open up the filtering options. To add a new filter, click "Add filter" in the top-right corner of the drop-down menu.

Managing segments

If you want to view the answers to only a specific demographic, click on "Data" above the chart. This will open a drop-down where you can manage the segments.

If you want to add a new segment, click "Add segment." You can change the order of your segments by dragging and dropping them in the new location. To remove a segment, click the down-facing arrow and select "Remove."

Note: Learn more about managing segments in our Building Segments article.
